Outdoor Hot Tub Maintenance Tips

What do you do with your hot tub when winter comes? Most of us would think that because of the cold, it would be the busiest time of the year for the hot tub. This is not necessarily true because some homeowners opt to go away during the winter season. So whichever case it may be, the best thing to do at this point is to understand how to properly maintain the hot tub during winter. How do we do it?

Changing the Water

Make sure to check on the water level regularly. It is important to ensure that the level of the water is never too low. You cannot just refill the water to bring it to appropriate level. You must do a complete water change to clean it before the temperature becomes too cold. This practice will maintain the optimum performance of the hot tub so you don’t have to face costly repairs. Doing this before the weather becomes extremely cold is simply practical and less difficult. Aside from the water level, also check on the chemical levels to ensure that they can work properly. By regularly checking these levels you can also verify whether water in the hot tub has frozen.

The Cover

Before you remove or open the cover of the hot tub, make sure that it is completely clear of ice. It is a good idea to invest in a good quality cover because majority of temperature losses happens from the water surface. This means that getting a good cover should be done even before winter comes in. Make sure as well that the hot tub cover is in good condition so that you can replace it if needed. This investment will save you a lot of money from your energy bills as it helps to maintain the heat of the water longer. If you want to increase the efficiency of the cover, get a floating thermal blanket as well. This works in combination with the hot tub cover and sits right on top of the water surface. The intention is to efficiently reduce heating costs during winter.

Not Functioning

If you feel that the hot tub is not functioning properly, do not make the mistake of draining it immediately. Instead, position a small water heater or an equivalent of a 100-watt service light in the equipment area; you may also use a heavy blanket if none of these are available. This is to stop freezing or keep ice from building up. When doing this, make sure that there is no direct contact with the surface or any part of the hot tub to prevent other potential damages from happening. If the problem persists, call an authorized service agent immediately.

Close or Not

Personal preferences can vary substantially, that is why the decision to close or not to close your hot tub during the winter season is a personal one. It is easy to understand how sitting in a warm hot tub can bring pleasure during the cold weather. But, if the temperature outside is colder than inside, then heating up the water will take a longer time to happen. This translates to higher energy bills for you. In case you are not planning on using your hot tub during winter or simply going away on vacation, then you would have to drain it properly before it cools off. Keep in mind that most of the damages happen during the cold season primarily because of the freezing or improper draining of the hot tub. Such damage will be very costly on your part so observe proper procedure when closing out your hot tub.

The good news is that if you have a high quality hot tub in your home, maintenance would not be that difficult and necessary to do regularly. Of course, it is different if you are planning to be away for an extended time. How long is extended? Generally this would be for six weeks or longer. You have two options at this point, either to properly drain and close the hot tub or have someone look after its weekly maintenance.

Proper maintenance and preparation for the winter is usually found in the manual. Should you have problems, contact the manufacturer or a licensed professional immediately.
